What DMARC does

DMARC tells inbox providers what to do with mail that claims to be from your domain but fails SPF and DKIM, and where to send reports about it.

Google and Yahoo require a DMARC record from anyone sending in volume, so set one up before you scale a cold email campaign. Start with p=none to collect reports without changing delivery.

How to add it

  1. 1

Pick your settings. Start with Monitor only and a report address you can read.

  2. 2

Add a TXT record. At your DNS provider, create a TXT record with the host _dmarc and paste the value.

  3. 3

Check it’s live. Run the deliverability checker a few minutes later to confirm receivers can see it.

Questions about DMARC

Which policy should I start with?

Monitor only (p=none). It changes nothing about delivery, and the reports show you which services send mail as your domain. Move to quarantine once your own mail passes.

Do I need SPF and DKIM first?

Yes. DMARC checks the results of SPF and DKIM, so set those up first. DMARC passes when either one passes and matches your domain.

What’s the difference between relaxed and strict alignment?

Relaxed lets a subdomain count as a match (mail.yourcompany.com matches yourcompany.com). Strict needs an exact match. Most senders should use relaxed.

Can I have more than one DMARC record?

No. With two, receivers ignore both. If you already have one, replace it rather than adding another.

Where do DMARC reports go, and how do I read them?

Receivers send daily XML reports to the rua address. They’re hard to read raw, so many teams send them to a DMARC report service, which turns them into a dashboard.
